II Dominican Republic Global Film Festival - 2008

The DR Global Film Festival, now in its second year after its 2006 premier, continues to bring the best in international film to the Dominican Republic. At the same time, the Festival offers numerous opportunities for learning, professional development and networking to a wide range of Dominican people. Youth from teenagers on, aspiring talents and students, seasoned professionals, movie buffs, fans, aficionados and the curious; any and all who have always admired the “seventh art,” those who produce it and those who are enjoying it for the first time – the Festival has become a must-see, a long awaited event.

On this occasion, over a period of five days, in five cities and ten movie theaters, the festival will screen thirty-six high quality films. While film festivals of varying grandeur and thematic niches abound in the world, the DR Global Film Festival is unique for various reasons. It is the only one to show films simultaneously in five different cities across the entire country. It is also the only festival that brings films to public university auditoriums. Furthermore, it is most extraordinary in its mission to promote cinematographic art as a means to gain a better understanding of the world as well as to raise consciousness about contemporary global issues.

Film is art. It is entertainment and fun. It is a message. It is an action and a call to action. It is the synthesis of all art forms, the synesthesia of feelings and impressions. It is a subtle power that reaches the spectator via multiple paths and impacts his or her life.

A good film shakes up our biases and preconceptions, stimulates our sense of solidarity and compassion, strengthens our spirit, renews our love for life or invites us to confront the unknown and face challenges.

This year, we have thirty-six opportunities to experience these sensations and to interact and share with the authors who have orchestrated them.

In addition, sixteen panels, master classes and workshops will give Dominican professionals and film enthusiasts a chance to learn and debate issues relevant to their professional development as well as to the progress of the Dominican film industry.

All of us who have been working for months so that this annual event would meet and exceed all expectations invite you to enjoy, to learn, and to celebrate this wealth of content and opportunities to meet and be together.
