"Crónica de una Fuga is a Metaphor"
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, November 10th, 2006

Israel Adrián Caetano, director of the Argentine film "Crónica de una Fuga" ("Chronicle of an Escape"), believes that the ghosts of Latin American dictators remain latent to this day.

Uruguayan director Israel Adrián Caetano explained tonight that his film, "Crónica de una fuga", shown in the Dominican Global Film Festival, is a metaphor for the issues of dictatorship and military repression.

For Caetano, the message of the film speaks to the present day reality of Latin American countries. In this sense, he affirms that "It is my theory that these ghosts are still latent."

After presenting his film in the auditorium of the library at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Caetano maintained that one must sit down to truly analyze the Latin American reality which is, by his understanding, very abstract.

"Crónica de una fuga" tells the true story of four young men who manage to escape from a hidden detention center (Mansión Seré) during the last military dictatorship. The Uruguayan explained that the idea for the movie came to him from two books written by two of the four who were able to escape. "One was written by Diego Tamburrini and published in Argentina and the other by Guillermo Fernández, who wrote it in France. The script was born from these two books".

"Crónica de una fuga", working with a budget of USD1.1 million, is Adrián Caetano’s fourth film. His first was "Pizza, Birra, Faso", followed by "Bolivia" and "Un oso rojo". The director is now working on scripts for others rather than directing his own projects.

The Film Festival, which runs until Sunday, November 12, was organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE). Under the title "Global Issues, Personal Stories", the Festival seeks to increase global awareness via the retelling of personal stories and circumstances.
