La sogaJosh Crook grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and studied history and art at Marietta College in Ohio. With his brother Jeff Crook, he has co-directed the films The Fittest (2003), Sucker Punch (2003), Ghetto Dawg 2 (2005), Salvage (2006), Rockaway (2007) and The Level (2009). The Butcher’s Son is his first solo feature.

Arriving fresh from its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and moving between Santiago, Dominican Republic and Washington Heights, New York, La Soga is many things: a crime story, a love story and a no-holds-barred examination of the costs of vengeance.

After witnessing his father’s murder at the hands of vicious New York criminal named Rafa, Santiago butcher’s son Luisito (Fantino Fernandez) meets General Colon (Juan Fernandez), head of the Dominican secret police. Colon preys on the boy's desire for revenge, transforming him into a heartless killer. Twenty years later, Luisito (Manny Perez) has risen to become Colon's top assassin, perpetually kept in control by the general's promise to deliver his father's killer, who has fled to New York.

But things change when Luisito re-encounters his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Denise Quiñones). Her tender attentions wake him to the corruption all around him. Full of raw energy and ragged beauty, this searing portrayal of a killer’s quest for redemption marks the feature debut of Josh Crooks and leading actor-writer-producer Manny Perez.
