"Filly Brown" to Open the VI Dominican Global Film Festival

(Santo Domingo, October 15, 2012) - More than 70 feature films and documentaries are confirmed to participate in the VI edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD), to be held between November 14 – 21. The opening film in Santo Domingo this year will be Filly Brown, directed by Michael Olmos and Youssef Delara.

This year’s date with world cinema in the Dominican Republic will take place in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Cap Cana, Nagua and Port au Prince, Haiti. As the guest of honor is Germany, Dominicans will enjoy the unique opportunity to get a closer look at a variety of this European country’s quality films.

The National Theater of Santo Domingo is the venue for this year’s gold carpet inauguration of the FCGD, to be held on Wednesday November 14. Following the parade of international and national stars, Filly Brown will officially open the Dominican Global Film Festival.

The following night, November 15, gala openings will also take place in
Santiago, Puerto Plata and Nagua with the participation of many of the Festival’s invited artists. In Port au Prince and Cap Cana, there will be film presentations on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th.

Omar de la Cruz, FCGD Director; Yvette Marichal, Director of Public Relations and Marketing and Executive Director of FUNGLODE, Marco Herrera jointly made this announcement at a press conference in the Café Filo of the Juan Bosch Library. Others present at this activity included the Dominican General Director of Film, Ellis Pérez and Gabriele Weber, a Minister from the German Embassy in the Dominican Republic.

As part of this year’s Dominican Global Film Festival, for the first time ever, the Maria Montez Award will be given to the best Dominican film. The award, a cash prize of RD$200,000, is being given under the auspices of the General Direction of Film. This year, Agliberto Meléndez won the award for his feature film, Pasaje de ida.

The FCGD is bringing to the DR and Port au Prince a series of high quality films that have already been lauded at other prestigious international film festivals. The Festival also provides unique opportunities for learning, professional training and the creation of networks for the general public as well as for industry professionals through the various panels and workshops that form part of the Festival program.
