Cuban Movie, "Una noche", Will Open Film Festival in Santiago de los Caballeros

(Santiago de los Caballeros, Oct 18, 2012) - The Cuban film, Una noche, by New York Director, Lucy Mulloy, will open the 6th edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD) in Santiago. The announcement was made this evening by FCGD Director, Omar de la Cruz, during a press conference at the Gran Teatro del Cibao.

Una noche, award winner for Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Actor at the Tribeca Film Festival, is the story of two Cuban teens who face the dilemma of leaving their home for the promise of a better life in Miami. Mr. De la Cruz said the film is rich in images combined with a beautiful story.

Omar de la Cruz announced that, as promised two years ago, this year’s edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival will have a Gold Carpet in honor of Santiago de los Caballeros and, in the coming years, gold will continue to be the official color of the FCGD carpet.

He announced that this year’s Film Festival will pay homage to the late Dominican actor, Lusito Martí for his important participation in Dominican film, whose acting made him a beloved Dominican character throughout the world. The FCGD director also announced that next year’s 7th Festival will include  Santiago as one of the cities where Fashion Film Showcase will be projected.

De la Cruz added that the two films which are part of this year’s “Germany: Guest of Honor” selection will be shown in Santiago and that the FCGD venues will continue to be the Film Palace of the Bella Terra Mall and the Regional University Center of Santiago (CURSA).

Yvette Marichal, FCGD’s Director of Public Relations and Marketing, thanked Santiago and its residents for the warmth they’ve shown for the Festival. “The support that Santiago has given to the FCGD is so important that every year we come and go with more surprises.”

Others connected to the Film Festival were also at the press conference including Tony Espinal, Sub-director of the Regional University Center of Santiago (CURSA) and Brenda Sánchez, Director of the Gran Teatro del Cibao. Ms. Sánchez said, “Beginning on November 14, we will once again make history. We are growing and it is the right moment to say that, in the Dominican Republic,  we are making films.”

FCGD organizers acknowledged support from the Embassy of Germany, Spain (through the Spanish Agency for International Development), Switzerland , the United State through the Franklin Center and the Dominico-German Center and Goethe Institute.
