Short Films: The Beginning of Everything
Santo Domingo, November 21, 2010

Through an audiovisual workshop, students and film buffs learned from the experiences of Eugenio Del Bosque, director of the Cine de las Américas, and Jonathan McIntosh, creator of Rebellious Pixels.

“El reino de la basura”, un documental que defiende el medio ambiente Using technology as a tool for artistic creation, Eugenio Del Bosque, director of the Cine de las Américas, and Jonathan McIntosh, creator of Rebellious Pixels, facilitated the workshop “Short Films: The Beginning of Everything”, at the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in the framework of the IV Dominican Republic Global Film Festival.

The audiovisual workshop addressed the importance of developing short films, and the process of creating and disseminating them, issues that picked the curiosity of students, filmmakers and fans.

"A short film tells a story in the shortest time possible; it is the most basic way to make a film and to promote a filmmaker’s work," answered Del Bosque to one attendee, during the Q&A session that brought the Latin and North American cultures, identified by the languages in which the workshop was conducted –English and Spanish, together.

McIstosh argued that to create short films "what is necessary is to be creative”, supporting this argument with a sample of some of his work which he showed to the audience, provoking dialogue, disagreements and raising questions on the role of modern industry in the production of short films.

Today social networks and mobile "smart" phones are a vital source of communication, essential for creating and distributing shorts. Networks are an engine for the expansion of art, contributing to the cultural growth of nations. But while these help spread audiovisual works, "festivals are the ideal means to spreading the shorts," said Del Bosque.

McIstosh and Forest recommended the following free Internet applications to begin working on short films:  Soudcloud, CC Search, Jay Cut, Stroom, Audacity, Miro Video Converter, Squared, Hard Brake and VLC.
